LIT - 135 Film as Literature 3 s.h.
This course provides an introduction to the essential elements of literature through the study of the visual medium of film. Literary elements, including narration, characterization, setting, theme, symbolism, and plot, will be explored in conjunction with film language. Students will discuss narrative films by engaging with them in historical, social, and cultural contexts. The course will examine fundamental concepts, such as cinematography, mise-en-scène, sound, and editing, in order to develop analytical skills in the context of film history and film theory. At the end of this course, a student should be familiar with film form, a general outline of film history, and some critical/theoretical perspectives for analyzing film as literature.
