ART - 203 Art History I (3 s.h.)
This course introduces the history of Western art from prehistoric through Gothic times. Students will study major works of painting, sculpture, architecture, and decorative arts, learning to identify titles, artists, media, and stylistic features of selected artworks. Emphasis is placed on contrasting stylistic characteristics, artistic purposes, and cultural contexts across major periods, including Prehistoric, Ancient Near Eastern, Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Early Christian, Byzantine, Romanesque, and Gothic art. Students develop art vocabulary, analyze creative achievements in their cultural contexts, and build foundational skills for further study in art history.
