Fundamentals of Construction (NIACC Workforce Academy)


The Fundamentals of Construction course is designed to provide students with basic carpentry skills and an understanding of construction techniques. Topics covered include construction safety, basic math, introduction to hand and power tools, rigging, fasteners, wood building materials, floor and wall systems, site preparation, plan reading, and window and exterior door installation. Students will gain practical experience by constructing a garden shed, applying the skills they have learned through framing, roofing, siding, window and door installation, and finishing techniques. 

Duration: Approximately 70 contact hours, format will vary depending on offering. 

Format: In-person courses held on campus. 

Certifications: Fundamentals of Construction Certificate upon successful completion, OSHA 10

Enrollment Process: There are no entrance exams or specific admission requirements for this program. Students can start the enrollment process by completing the Education to Employment Interest Form available on the program’s webpage.  

Eligibility Requirements: Students must be at least 18 years of age. No formal admissions requirements or entrance exams are needed.

Next Steps After Interest Form: Once the interest form is submitted, students will be contacted by staff from the Education to Employment team to discuss program enrollment and tuition assistance options.   

Program Requirements & Equipment 

Required Equipment or Supplies: Students will be required to wear jeans and steel-toed boots. Jeans must be provided by the student, but boots will be provided by NIACC. 

Pre-Course Skills & Expectations: No prior construction experience is required, but basic math skills and an interest in hands-on learning will be beneficial. Students should be ready to learn basic carpentry skills and engage in physical tasks. 

Additional Considerations: Students should be prepared for physically demanding tasks, including lifting, bending, and working with tools in various weather conditions. Strong attention to safety and the proper care of tools is emphasized throughout the course.
