This class is designed to enable students to develop basic skills and knowledge in carpentry. Included in this class are the study of construction techniques with an emphasis on basic safety, basic math, introduction to hand and power tools, basic rigging, fasteners, wood building materials, floor and wall systems, site preparation, plan reading, and window and exterior door installation. The class provides a basic concept of proper building techniques and covers material uses and identification with a strong emphasis on safety and knowledge of proper tools to use and how to care for them. Students will have the opportunity to put theory into practice through the hands-on construction of a garden shed, including framing, roofing, siding, window and door installation, and finishing techniques.
